The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (or Staffy) is sometimes mistaken for the American Staffordshire Terrier. The difference is easy to see as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is significantly smaller than the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Descended from dog-fighting ancestors, the Staffy is a muscular dog. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is friendly medium-sized dog with a short coat that is good with children. The Staffy loves company and gets along well with other pets and people.

Character and behavior
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a loyal dog that is easy to train. The Staffy is a social and friendly dog that makes a great family dog. The Staffy is an intelligent dog that needs firm but gentle training. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is known for its endurance and the dog breed needs a significant amount of daily exercise to stay happy and balanced.

The Staffy is also a brave and confident dog that knows no fear so it can hurt itself by getting into dangerous situations. It is known to break through barriers without regard for its own health. A Staffy rarely barks unless an intruder is nearby.

History of the breed
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originates in England where it is the fifth most popular dog breed. The dog is named after the area where it was initially bred. The Staffy shares a background with the Bull Terrier and dates back to the Eighteenth Century.

The Staffy was bred with an ambition to create a powerful dog with fighting capabilities, speed, endurance and no fear. This was achieved by mixing Old English Bulldogs with local Terrier breeds. Later the Manchester Terrier, English White Terrier and the Black-and-tan Terrier was also mixed into the creation of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a relatively small but muscular dog that has incredible power in relation to the dog’s size. The head is short but wide and the jaw is strong. The muzzle is black and the eyes are medium-sized and dark. The ears are small and erect (sometimes folding over). The tail is medium in length and sits low on the dog.

The Staffy is typically 14-17 inches high and weighs between 24-34 pounds. The coat comes in a variety of colors: brindle, black, red, fawn, blue, white, or any blending of these colors with white. The do will often have white markings on the chest. The short coat is smooth and thick and doesn’t require much grooming. The Staffy has an average life span of 10-15 years.
