Origin:

The Chinese dog breed Shar Pei can be traced all of the way back to the Han Dynasty (200 B.C. to 220 A.C.). The Shar Pei was used by Chinese peasants for hunting, as a guard dog and a family dog.

Shar Pei translates to “sand skin” and refers to the texture of its short and rough coat. The Shar Pei’s most distinctive features are the dog’s deep wrinkles and a blue-black tongue.

Character and behavior
A Shar Pei bonds with its family and gets along well with kids. A Shar Pei carries itself with elegance and confidence. The dog breed can be reserved towards strangers and is a great guard dog.

The Shar Pei was used as a guard dog in the Chinese temples. A Shar Pei is relatively easy to train but can get bored if the training progresses too slowly. The Shar Pei only needs moderate amounts of exercise and can live in an apartment if it is taken for walks daily.

History of the breed
The Shar Pei is among the most rare dog breeds in the world today and it was close to extinction twice. The first time was during the Chinese famine when the communists came into power and declared that all dogs were luxury items and put heavy taxes on them.

In 1970 it was estimated that only a few Shar Pei remained in China and in an effort to save the dog breed from extinction some Shar Pei were shipped from Hong Kong to the United States.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Chinese Shar-Pei is a unique and intelligent dog most often recognized for its wrinkles. The Shar Pei has lots of wrinkles, a soft muzzle, a black-blue tongue and small ears and a curly tail. The short coat requires no grooming. The Shar Pei is a large dog that has an average height of 18-22 inches an weighs 40 to 65 pounds.

As a puppy the Shar Pei looks like a ball of wrinkles but later on as the dog develops the amount of wrinkles become less. The wrinkles in a Shar Pei’s face are as unique as a person’s finger prints. A Shar Pei is very clean and easy to house break.
