The Sealyham Terrier is a small but brave dog that is loyal to its owners. The Sealyham Terrier is a very independent dog that can be reserved towards strangers. The Sealyham Terrier is a rare breed of dog that originates in Wales where the dog was used to hunt small animals.

Character and behavior
The Sealyham Terrier can be stubborn and independent. That makes the dog harder to train and you need to be firm and gentle when training the dog. The Sealyham Terrier will respond well to a strong and experienced owner and the dog loves to work and spend its considerable energy.

The Sealyham Terrier is a good family dog that can get along with cats and other pets if the dog is used to them as a puppy. The Sealyham Terrier gets along well with kids but will not tolerate any abuse so it is important to supervise kids with the dog. The Sealyham Terrier loves to spend time with its family and is a very active dog.

History of the breed
The Sealyham Terrier is an old breed of dog that originates in Wales. In the Nineteenth century Captain John Edwards bred the small all-round hunting terrier. In his development of the Sealyham Terrier John Edwards used many other dog breeds such as the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Corgi, Wirehaired Fox Terrier and Bull Terrier.

It was important to Edwards that the Sealyham Terrier had a white coat that would make it easy for the hunter to separate it from the red fox.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Sealyham Terrier is a hardy, small, short-legged white dog. In proportion to the rest of the body the dog’s head is long and wide. The muzzle is black and the eyes are oval and dark. The ears are wide and folds over.

The Sealyham Terrier is typically no more than 12 inches in height and weighs no more than 20 pounds. The coat has two layers. The outer coat repels rain and slush and the inner coat is soft and thick to keep warm. The Sealyham Terrier doesn’t shed much but needs a trim a couple of times a year. The Sealyham Terrier is generally a healthy dog breed that has an average life span of 15 years.
