The Rhodesian Ridgeback originates in South Africa where it adapted to the rough nature. The European settlers took an interest in the dog breed and decided to further develop it. The Europeans wanted a dog that was faster, more agile, stronger and with a more keen sense of smell.

So the Europeans mixed the dog with other breeds like the Greyhound, Bulldog, Pointer, Mastiff and later the Airedale Terrier, Irish Terrier and Collie. In this way they created a great guard dog with a protective instinct that was also a great hunting dog that would track jackals, hyena, antelope, leopards and even lions.
