The Pug is a small toy breed with a wrinkly, short-muzzled face and curled tail. The name “Pug” comes from the English words “pugg” or puge” that are nicknames for a playful small devil or monkey. A Pug has a small but square and muscled body.

The Pug is known for its remarkable personality and dates all the way back to the ancient chinese Shang Dynasty where Pugs were bred to adorn the laps of Chinese nobles. The Pug is often referred to as “multum in parvo” (much in little) describing the pug’s remarkable personality despite its small size.

Character and behavior
The serious looking facial expression that is often seen on a Pug is misleading as the Pug is very playful and silly. The Pug is a social, playful, intellingent and charming small pacage of joy but can also be stubborn. A Pug will get along well with other people and pets but is capable of bonding with a single owner. A Pug will follow its people around the house and can get separation anxiety if not properly trained to be alone.

Appearance, grooming and health
Pug will generally have a height between 10-14 inches and a weight between 13-20 pounds. The Pug has a fine, glossy coat that comes in a variety of colors. The tail normally curls in over the body. A Pug will shed most of the year but regular grooming helps reduce shedding on the furniture.

History of the breed
Contrary to many other toy dogs the Pug does not have a previous history as a working dog. The Pug was bred specifically as a toy dog from the beginning. The first Pugs were bred in China where they entertained the noble families.

Later on the dog breed made it to Tibet where the monks kept the Pugs. Later on merchant sailors from the East India Trading Company spread the dog breed to Europe towards the end of the 16th century. The Pug is shown in paintings by Goya in Italy.

Today the Pug is a popular breed that has also featured in movies such as Will Smith’s “Men in Black” where the Pug “Frank” is a star. Jake Gyllenhall has a Pug and the Pug “Percy” is in Disney’s Pochahontas. Among other stars that has had or currently owns a Pug are Billy Joel, Denise Richards, Gerrard Butler, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Tori Spelling and the list goes on.
