Character and behavior

The OES is good with children but can knock them over when too exuberant and playful as the dog is quite large. The Old English Sheepdog has a keen herding instinct and will often try to herd its humans by pushing them in the desired direction.

The dog breed is playful and energetic and remains puppy-like for many years. The OES needs a great deal of exercise to thrive. The Old English Sheepdog is great at adapting to its environment and can live in an apartment as long as it gets lots of exercise outside.

History of the breed
The Old English Sheepdog originates in England where the dog was used for herding cattle and sheep. Many years ago it was common practice to crop the tail and that earned the dog the name Bobtail.

It’s not known exactly what dog breeds went into the creation of the Old English Sheepdog but it is widely believed that the dog breed is a result from a mix between the French Briard, Russian Owtchar or descendants from the Scottish Bearded Collie.

In the beginning of the nineteenth century the Old English Sheepdog was imported to the U.S. where it was established as an upper class family dog. Today the OES is widespread as a family dog.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Old English Sheepdog is a large dog, immediately recognizable by its long, thick, shaggy grey and white coat, with fur covering their face and eyes. The dog is muscular and sturdy with a large head.

The coat on the head is so long that sometimes the eyes are hidden if the hair isn’t cut or tied above the eyes. The muzzle is black and the ears hangs from the head. The dog can have a height up to 24 inches and weigh up to 100 lbs.
