The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (or Toller for short) is a gundog bred primarily for hunting ducks. Today the Toller is a popular family dog for the active family. The Toller is easy to train but requires a lot of exercise to thrive. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever originated in southwestern Nova Scotia in Canada and is the smallest of the retrievers.

Character and behavior
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a lively and energetic dog that requires a lot of exercise and mental challenges. The Toller makes an excellent family dog as long as it can get the required exercise. The Toller is also excellent with kids and very affectionate towards its family. The Toller can be more reserved towards strangers than other Retrievers like the Golden Retriever.

It’s important to socialize the Toller early with other dogs and people so that the dog doesn’t become anxious around other people, pets and dogs.

Like the other Retrievers the Toller excels at retrieving and loves fetch games. Because the Toller is an easy to train and intelligent dog that is eager to please you’ll get far with the Toller in obedience training, agility and other training activities. You can teach a Toller almost anything with positive reinforcement and mutual trust.

History of the breed
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever originates in Canada and is named after the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia. The exact history of the Toller is unknown but most agree that European gundogs are its ancestors. It is also possible that dog breeds such as Golden Retriever, Flat Coated Retriever, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Collie and Spaniel might have been mixed into the Toller at some time.

In 1960 the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever breed almost vanished but through work with a mere 10 dogs the breed was saved and reestablished.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Toller is a medium-sized dog with a friendly expression. It has a reddish brown coat with white marks on the paws. The head has the shape of a wedge and the eyes are like amber. The ears hangs on the head and the tail is long. The Toller typically weighs 37 – 51 lbs and is 18 to 20 inches in height.

The Toller has a medium-length coat with a softer and dense undercoat. The coat requires regular grooming and the dog should not be washed often as that removes natural oils from the coat. The Toller has a lifespan of 10-14 years.
