Character and behavior
The Mastiff is an easy going and calm dog that makes a great family dog. The Mastiff is good with kids and other dogs. Most owners of this breed describe their dog as an easy going giant Teddy Bear.

Because of the nature of the Mastiff you’ll need to handle the dog in a gentle but firm way in training. Like other dogs it’s important to provide leadership so the dog doesn’t become dominant. The Mastiff doesn’t require much exercise and can live in an apartment if you take the dog for daily walks.

A Mastiff is rarely aggressive but is a great guard dog. The Mastiff isn’t likely to bark or bite intruders unless forced into a situation, it is more likely to close of an escape route and growl at the intruder keeping the intruder from leaving.

History of the breed
The Mastiff as we know it today originates from England. It is an ancient breed that can be traced more than 4500 years back. The Romans brought the dog breed to Rome and used the Mastiff as fighting dogs. In Rome the Mastiff was used to fight lions, bears and other dogs.

Later on the Mastiff was used as guard dogs in English towns. During the World Wars the Mastiff almost died out as it was difficult to get food for the big dogs during the wars. But breeding the few remaining Mastiffs saved the dog breed and the Mastiff is a very popular breed today.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Mastiff has a wide head with proportionally small dark eyes. The ears are small and placed high on the head. The muzzle is short and the head is wrinkled. The Mastiff has a long tail that it wears high.

A Mastiff weighs about 120-250 pounds and has a height of more than 28 inches. The coat is short and has three color variations: fawn, apricot or brindle. The coat requires regular brushing and sheds an average amount. The average life span of the Mastiff is about 10 – 12 years.
