The Maltese dog is a small and lively dog that is also affectionate and intelligent. The Maltese dog’s origin can be traced to the island Malta and Italy and dates back several millennial.

The Maltese is a toy dog that loves company and will try to please its owner. The long flowing coat of the dog provides the Maltese with a dignified look and the dog breed is often seen at dog shows. Originally the dog breed was known as the “Canis Melitaeus” in Latin, but the Maltese has also been known as the “ancient dog of Malta”, the “Roman Ladies’ Dog” and the “Maltese Lion Dog”.

Character and behaviour
The Maltese is a playful and gentle dog breed. It excels at learning new dog tricks and is relatively easy to train. The Maltese is good at getting along with and living with other pets and dogs.

Just like other dogs the Maltese likes to play outside. Even though the Maltese is a small dog breed and very cute it is important that you provide it with leadership and consistent rules. Don’t be overly protective of the Maltese as it can become insecure and be aggressive towards strangers and guests. The Maltese doesn’t need much exercise and is perfect for apartment living.

History of the breed
The Maltese dog dates back several millennial and is an ancient dog breed. The Maltese is very similar to the Bichon dogs and originates in Malta and Italy. Malta was the first country to recognize the breed hence the name Maltese dog. The Maltese dog was popular among noble women that adored the small breed. It is widely believed that the Maltese was cross-bred with Miniature Spaniels and Poodles.

Appearance, grooming and health
The most characteristic feature of the Maltese is the long white coat that is parted along the center of the back. Sometimes the long hair on the Maltese dog’s head is held up with a clip so that the dog better can see.

The ears sits low on the head and has long hair that makes the ears look longer than they are. The wet snout is always black and the eyes are small and black.

The Maltese weighs between 5 to 12 lbs though many Kennel Clubs like the AKC call for a weight that is ideally less than 7 lbs. The Maltese has a height of about 7-12 inches.

The long silky white coat demands a good deal of grooming and it’s important to brush the coat on a daily basis. The long hair can easily become dirty so expect to bathe the dog regularly. If you don’t want to show your dog in competitions you can cut the coat short and that will reduce the amount of grooming required significantly.

The Maltese is known to suffer from eye and skin conditions and does not deal well with extreme weather conditions such as too much heat or cold or a wet climate. In sunny weather the Maltese can get sun burnt along the line on the back where the coat parts. The Maltese has a life span that can reach from 15 to 18 years and that is a lot for a dog.
