Kerry blue terrier is a friendly and playful breed, which belongs to the group of Irish terriers. In Ireland it is actually referred to as the Irish blue terrier. Blue refers to the colour of the coat. The Kerry blue terrier thrives by being close to its owners and will make a fine guard dog. However, it does not attack uninvited guests. It is an active breed that requires a lot of exercise.

Character and behaviour
The Kerry blue terrier is friendly and stubborn at the same time. It is good with children and other pets as long as they are introduced while the dog is still a puppy. The training must be consistent and firm. Otherwise, the dog will become deciding and refuses to do as it is told. It is a good strategy to apply much more praise than criticism in the training.

In addition, it is an intelligent breed that is capable of learning many different tricks due to its excellent memory. Another way of mentally and physically stimulating the dog is through agility. However, it is essential that the dog finds it challenging, otherwise it will quickly loose interest.

The Kerry blue terrier is an excellent family dog, which is good at adjusting to its surroundings. It hardly barks without any reason.

History of the breed
The Kerry blue terrier’s exact origin is uncertain. Even though the name suggests that is derives from the Kerry-region there is no documentation hereof. Instead, it is said that it may derive from the Tipperary region in the south of Ireland.

It is said to be crossings between the Portuguese waterdog, Irish wolfhound, and Irish soft-coated wheaten terrier that helped develop the Kerry blue terrier. However, it is uncertain.

It is certain, however, that farmers used it to carry out different kinds of work. The Kerry blue terrier was suitable as a rat catcher, shepherd dog, guard dog, and some times as a hunting dog. Today, it is a pet dog that still loves to be challenged.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Kerry blue terrier has, as most other terriers, a long and square looking head. The ears are small, v-shaped, and folded. The eyes are medium-sized and dark. It is a small but muscular dog with a well-proportioned body.

The coat is soft and fluffy. It is wavy and requires quite a lot of grooming. Besides brushing the dog 2-3 times a week it also needs a haircut several times a year. The hairs in the ear canal need plucking in order to avoid ear infections. In addition, it needs regular bathing to keep clean. And the skin does not dry out as in other breeds.

Besides, the Kerry blue terrier hardly sheds making it suitable for allergy sufferers. It does not smell badly not even when it is wet.

It is a healthy breed. However, it may be inclined to suffer from hip dysplasia. Life expectancy is 12-15 years.
