Golden Retriever is a dog breed originally bred in Scotland to fill the role of a hunting dog. The Golden Retriever’s primary task was to retrieve ducks and other small game for its owner during the hunt.

The Golden Retriever was bred to have a soft mouth, so that the Golden Retriever could bring dead ducks etc. back to its owner without too much impact from the dog’s mouth on the game. Golden Retriever has a very strong fetch and bring back instinct and loves playing in water.

A working dog with many roles

The Golden Retriever’s temperament and positive willingness to please its owner makes the Golden Retriever easy to train for solving specific tasks. Therefore you see the Golden Retriever in many different professional roles such as hunting dog, searching for drugs, rescue dogs, service dogs for the disabled and many other roles. The fact that Golden Retriever’s are easy to train makes them very suited for agility competitions and obedience training.

A happy family dog
With its historical background Golden Retriever’s loves to play fetch with its owner or children. The Golden Retriever’s gentle temper, kindness, patience, joyful attitude to life and willingness to please its owner makes the Golden Retriever an excellent family dog that bonds well with its family.

The Golden Retriever’s history as a breed
Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland in Guisachan near Glen Affric to Sir Dudley Majoribanks estate in the Scottish Highlands. For many years there were disagreement about what breeds were originally crossed in an attempt to create a formidable hunting dog. However the publication of Majoribanks breeding books in 1952 put a stop to the rumor that Majoribanks had bought a pack Russian Sheep Dogs from a travelling circus.

The improvements in gun technology for hunting during the 1800s resulted in the fact that more birds were shot during hunts from a longer and longer distance and more inaccessible terrain and water. This led to the unwanted result that more and more shot down birds were lost during the hunt because the hunter was unable to find them.

This new and important problem led to the need to breed a special hunting dog that could retrieve downed birds and small game for hunters because special training for Setters and Pointer breeds proved to be ineffective. Therefore Majoribanks began to breed a new breed which eventually became the Golden Retriever.

The Golden Retriever’s many positive attributes, including its patience towards children, have made the Golden Retriever one of the most popular family dogs in the world – measured in number of registrations.

A Golden Retriever is perhaps the right choice for you if you want a dog that is:

  • Full of energy and need lots of exercise and mental stimulation and can be very playful.
  • Has a beautiful coat.
  • Golden Retriever has a friendly temperament and coming on well with other animals.
  • Would like to please and is therefore easy to train.

Some of a Golden Retriever’s grades may not be right for you depending on what you are looking for:

  • A Golden Retriever needs a lot of exercise to thrive.
  • It sheds a lot.
  • A Golden Retriever likes to chew on things, or pick them up and bring them to you.
  • A Golden Retriever can easily become enthusiastic especially as a young dog, and want to jump up on you and strangers if not trained properly.
