The French bulldog is a small and compact dog with a friendly and cheerful temperament. They are lively and playful at the same time. Owners of this breed describe them as being outright humorous. Despite the fact that it is a small dog it is not loud and thus suitable to live in the city.

Character and behaviour
The French bulldog is an intelligent and loving companion, which loves fun and trickery. It really enjoys spending time with its owner and is also good with strangers and other pets. It functions best with larger children that manage to display leadership.

The French bulldog does not require a lot of exercise. However, it is important to take it on a daily walk. In addition, it is important to keep an eye on the dog when it is near water given that it cannot swim. It is an excellent family dog, which requires calm, but firm training. In warm weather the French bulldog should not be strained as it may experience breathing difficulties due to its flat nose.

History of the breed
The French bulldog originates from England where it derives from the English bulldog. In connection with the industrial revolution English lace makers brought along the miniature version to France, where it was further developed. Exactly how many breeds were involved is uncertain. The English people did not like the fact that the word “French” became part of the name, but it remained unchanged.

Subsequently, the breed experienced great popularity in the USA. And it is thanks to the Americans that the breed has erect bat ears.

Appearance, grooming and health
The French bulldog has a very characteristic look with its flat muzzle, bat ears and big eyes. It is small and compact with short legs. The body is muscular and the head broad and square with a flat black nose. The eyes are dark. The skin around the neck and on the head hangs loose.

The French bulldog is 12 inches and weighs 19-22 pounds.

The coat is short and dense. It is smooth to the touch and only requires minimal grooming. The French bulldog is an average shedder.

The French bulldog may be prone to an array of genetic diseases: Joint diseases, back problems, heart conditions, and eye problems. Thus, be prepared to receive large vet bills. In addition, it is important not to overfeed this breed. Life expectancy is 10-12 years.
