The fox terrier is a playful and lively terrier that is especially loyal towards its family. It derives from England and is closely related to the wiry haired fox terrier. The fox terrier is an alert breed, which is protective of its family and barks loudly if it senses uninvited guests. On the other hand, it will give a warm welcome to invited guests.

Character and behaviour
The fox terrier is a typical terrier meaning that it is lively, energetic, and charming. Their playful behaviour is well received by children but it is important to socialize the fox terrier with children while it is still a puppy. Given that it is a hunting dog it will probably chase and possibly kill small game and birds if the chance occurs. It is therefore best to keep the dog on a leash or in a fenced in garden.

It is an intelligent breed, which enjoys being mentally challenged. They are capable of learning many different tricks. And as long as they are socialised early they can easily associate with other dogs – both large and small dogs.

The fox terrier requires a lot of exercise but it can live in the city as long as it gets daily walks. It is very active indoors but will manage without a fenced in garden.

History of the breed
The fox terrier was developed in the 18th century in England where the black-and-tan terrier, beagle, bullterrier, and greyhound were crossed. The fox terrier was used for hunting foxes and rabbits. In addition, it was an excellent rat catcher. For many years the wiry haired fox terrier and the smooth fox terrier were considered the same breed. In 1876 the breed standard for fox terrier was documented and they became two separate breeds.

Appearance, grooming and health
The fox terrier is a small and bright dog with v-shaped ears. The tail is medium long and carried raised. The eyes are small and dark. The head is flat and the neck is muscular. The legs are straight. The nose is black.

The fox terrier is 14-16 inches tall and weighs 15-20 pounds.

The coat is short and hard. It is also dense and often white with black and brown markings. It requires minimal grooming. It sheds two times a year. In all white dogs deafness may be a problem. Besides, it is generally speaking a healthy breed. Life expectancy is 15+ years.
