The flat-coated retriever derives from England and is the third most popular retriever (the most popular are golden retriever and Labrador retriever). The flat-coated retriever has a medium length coat and a natural talent for hunting and outdoor activities on land and at sea.

Character and behaviour
The flat-coated retriever is very outgoing, trustworthy, and friendly like the other retriever breeds. The flat-coated retriever is well suited for hunting and often demonstrates optimism and kindness by enthusiastically wagging its tail.

The flat-coated retriever is a fine family dog, which gets along with everybody. This breed needs a lot of exercise and activity in order to thrive. In case the dog is not activated sufficiently it will behave badly and maybe dig up the garden.

History of the breed
Originally, the flat-coated retriever was developed at the large English estates to hunt in the 19th century. One of the ancestors is thought to be the St. John dog that was brought to England in the 19th century by the North American fishermen from Newfoundland. Until 1870 all flat-coated retrievers were called wavy coated retrievers.

The following name change originated in the desire of a flat coat (instead of a wavy) providing the dog with an advantage when retrieving in water. For a long period of time the flat-coated retriever was the most popular hunting dog in England but was later outperformed by the Labrador and other breeds.

Appearance, grooming and health
The medium sized flat-coated retriever has an alert, intelligent, and active expression. It is a very athletic breed that is elegantly built without being too slender. The flat-coated retriever is 22-23 inches and weighs 60-70 pounds. The coat colour is either black or brown.

What you should know about the breed:

  • A flat-coated retriever is easily trained and aims to please its owners
  • A very outgoing breed
  • Not suitable as a guard dog given that it will meet the intruder with a shoe in its mouth as a present
  • Tendency of chewing things if not weaned off
  • Bred to retrieve and loves to bring you things in its mouth (also newly purchased things)
  • A lovely family dog with a friendly and playful spirit
