Character and behaviour
The English toy terrier is a small lively dog with typical terrier features. It is an intelligent breed, which makes a perfect guard dog. Usually, the English toy terrier only gets attached to one family member. However, it will do all right in a family with young children as long as the children respect the dog.

The English toy terrier should never be left alone with small pets such as mice, rats, guinea pigs etc. given that it was developed to hunt rats. It is a friendly and charming family dog. It requires a lot of exercise in order to settle down inside.

History of the breed
The English toy terrier derives from the northern parts of England. The poor used it for hunting rats and for dog races. The crossing of the black-and-tan terrier and the whippet first developed the Manchester terrier. Later the bull terrier and the English white terrier was included. However, the offspring widely varied in size. Subsequently, the smallest Manchester terriers were selected in order to create a miniature version. The small English toy terrier became very popular in the 19th century. Today it is a relatively uncommon breed.

Appearance, grooming and health
English toy terrier is easily recognized due to its erect flame shaped ears. The head is long and narrow. The lower back is slightly arched. The eyes are small and dark. The nose is black and pointed. The tail is medium long and thin.

The English toy terrier is 9-11 inches tall and weighs 5,9 – 7,9 pounds.

The coat is short, smooth, and flat. It only requires minimal grooming. Generally speaking a healthy breed, which is expected to be at least 10 years.
