Origin:

The English Springer spaniel is a very pleasant dog, which is suitable as a family dog. In addition, it is a brilliant hunting dog. It is good at springing game and retrieving. The Springer spaniel is closely related to the other types of spaniels. It requires a fair amount of exercise and mental training in order to thrive.

Character and behaviour
The English Springer spaniel is a water loving hunting dog and family dog. It is an intelligent dog, which quickly responds to new instructions. It requires an owner, which demonstrates authority and sets clear rules. In case the dog does not encounter these features it will try to take control and display unwanted behaviour like for example biting other people.

An English Springer spaniel loves water and tends to romp in waterholes and mud outside. They are usually good at associating with other pets, but their hunting instinct makes them chase birds.

There are two different kinds of Springer spaniels: the familiar hunting/family/show dog and the field dog, which exclusively is used for hunting. The main difference between the two is the colour and length of the coat. On the field dog, the coat is shorter and whiter. In addition, it has greater stamina and requires even more exercise.

History of the breed
English Springer spaniel has its roots in Spain, but was further developed in England. Here it became the foundation of English field spaniels.

In the beginning it was possible to find cocker spaniels, field spaniels, and Springer spaniels in the same litter. It was only the size of the puppy that determined which breed it would belong to. Later on, it became to confusing and the breed was separated into three different breeds, The English Springer spaniel was recognised as an autonomous breed in 1902.

Appearance, grooming and health
A special feature of the English Springer spaniel is its long drop-shaped ears. The head is broad and the eyes are medium sized and dark brown. It has a friendly expression and the nose is either black or brown depending on the colour of the coat. The front legs are straight and the chest deep. The tail is medium long and longhaired.

English Springer spaniel is 19-21 inches and weighs 45-55 pounds.

The coat is often white with black markings or brown markings. Other colour combinations are also possible. The coat requires frequent brushing in order for the coat not to tangle. Besides, it requires regular trimming/haircutting. In addition, it is important to check the ears regularly for redness and infection.

The English Springer spaniel may be prone to suffer from hip dysplasia, eye problems, epilepsy, or a genetic determined blood disease. They easily gain weight thus overfeeding the dog should be avoided. Life expectancy is 12-14 years.

  • A friendly and loving family dog
  • Requires a fair deal of exercis.
  • Can live in an apartment, if it gets plenty of exercise.
  • Good with children.
