Origin:

English foxhound was developed as a hunting dog and is therefore a very active breed. It thrives best in the country or in a home with a large fenced in garden. It is capable of running around all day and has a great stamina. As the name implies, the English foxhound derives from England. It can be dated back to the 16th century. In England it is still used for foxhunting.

Character and behaviour
The English foxhound is a super active and energetic hunting dog. When getting an English foxhound be prepared to activate the dog through lots of exercise daily. Its stamina is extraordinary but if it does not run around sufficiently it can become destructive. Two different types of English foxhound exist: the show dog and the hunting dog. The show dog does not require as much exercise as the hunting dog.

The English foxhound is bred to live in a large herd but it is still important to socialize the dog as a puppy. It is not a typical family dog and it is best suited for a family with older children. The English foxhound is suited for obedience training even though it takes some patience. The challenge lies in getting the dog to come back when called. Due to its hunting instincts it will track and chase any prey. And it will have trouble obeying the owners command.

History of the breed
The English foxhound is a breed that was developed for hunting foxes. It is an old breed, which can be dated back to the 16th century. It is not certain which breeds are included in the English foxhound. However, it is thought that greyhound, bulldog, and fox terrier have been included at some point. The English foxhounds were bred to trace foxes and live together with horses. Today, they are still used that way in England.
