Coton de tulear derives from the port Tulear in Madagascar near the coast of Africa. Coton de tulear is a small white dog with a soft and cotton wool like coat that has generated the name ‘Cotton dog’. This breed was often used as a ship dog.

Coton de tulear belongs to the bichon family, which was spread to many continents during the Spanish empire in the 14th century. Coton de tulear is an allergy friendly dog given that it does not shed a lot and has no inner coat.

Character and behaviour
Coton de tulear is a playful and friendly family dog. It is easily trained and suitable for agility. Even though it is a small dog it can make a lot of noise when it gets excited or is having fun.

It loves to meet new people and is extremely outgoing and curious. It is easy to train a Coton de tulear given that it loves to please their owner. They are also good with children and other pets.

History of the breed
The Coton de tulear derives from Madagascar and is named after the port Tulear. It can be dated back to the 16th century. The Coton de tulear is still the national breed of Madagascar. It is believed that the Coton de tulear is derived from crossings between the bichon dogs and Maltese dogs onboard merchant ships in the Indian Ocean in the 16th century.

Coton de tulear was also called the crocodile dog because it was used to alert the crew to crocodiles. The Coton de tulear is very popular today.

Coton de tulear is a small dog with a white coat without dandruff, which often causes allergic reactions. It is a fun loving family dog. A Coton de tulear often expresses itself through a great variation of sounds. The coat is soft and cotton like.

Coton de Tulear is 10-12 inches and weighs 12-15 pounds.
