Origin:

The Clumber spaniel is a hunting dog with a gentle and kind temper. It originates from France but was truly developed in England. However, it is an excellent family dog. The Clumber spaniel is not very active once it is full-grown. It drools a lot due to its large lips.

Character and behaviour
The Clumber spaniel is a compliant and loyal hunting dog and family dog. Compared to other spaniels the Clumber spaniel is the most calm and reserved. But at the same time it is a very stabile and kind dog towards its owners.

It is good with children, other pets, and even cats if they grow up together. It is important to socialise the dog so that it does not become too reserved towards strangers.

The Clumber spaniel is an intelligent breed that enjoys having a job to do that pleases its owner. The training must be gentle but firm. The Clumber spaniel is suitable for hunt but it is a heavy type of spaniel and therefore not very fast. On the other hand it has great stamina and an excellent sense of smell. And the broad muzzle makes it capable of retrieving different kinds of game.

History of the breed
The Clumber spaniel is an English breed but is said to derive from France. It is uncertain precisely how the breed was developed. One theory says that it was a French duke who handed over the breed to the duke of Newcastle during the French revolution because he was concerned about the breed’s survival.

In Newcastle the dogs were used for hunt in a large National park called Clumber Park that the dogs were named after. During the First World War the breed was on the brink of extinction, but dedicated breeders managed to save it. However, it is considered a rare breed today.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Clumber spaniel has a characteristic look with its large powerful head and hanging lips. The large ears are also hanging down. The legs are relatively short with sturdy bone structure. The tail is long and longhaired.

The Clumber spaniel is 16-20 inches tall and weighs approximately 55-85 pounds.

The coat is long, silky, and soft. The coat colour should preferably be white with lemon or orange markings. The muzzle is speckled. This breed is a heavy shedder and requires regular brushing and trimming.

Moreover, it is important to keep ears and eyes clean otherwise they can become irritated. The Clumber spaniel may be inclined to suffer from hip dysplasia, cataract, eye problems, and skin irritation. Life expectancy is 10-12 years.

What you should know about the breed:

  • A loyal and gentle dog
  • More reserved than other spaniels
  • Calm when being inside
  • Suitable for apartment living as long as it gets plenty of exercise
