Origin:

The Bull terrier is a muscular dog with a very characteristic appearance due to its egg-shaped head and small eyes. Originally, it was an aggressive breed, but today it is a nice and gentle family dog. The Bull terrier requires firm training and a lot of exercise. They are not suitable for families with small children.

Character and behaviour
The Bull terrier is a happy and active breed, which loves different activities. So saying, it is best suitable for an active family. It should not be left alone for eight hours a day. The Bull terrier requires sustained and firm training in order to function well.

It is important that the owner demonstrates constant leadership. In this way you manage to get a well-balanced dog, which is closely related to its owner. In addition, it is important to socialise the dog as early as possible, but they are not recommended with other pets such as rabbits, hamsters, or guinea pigs.

History of the breed
The Bull terrier is an English breed, which originally looked and acted differently than the breed we know today. In the 1800s it was used for bullfights and was bred by crossing an English bulldog with a black-and-tan terrier. It was called ‘the dog gladiator’ given that it was fearless and strong.

Subsequently a more graceful dog, with a calm temperament was requested and many different breeds were then crossed with the breed: Dalmatians, Greyhounds, Spanish Pointer, Foxhound, and Borzoi. The combination of these robust and light dogs helped create the Bull terrier we know today. It is also due to these different breeds, that the bull terrier is available in different colour variations. Previously, it was only available in white.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Bull terrier is a strong and muscular dog, which in particular is characterised by its egg-shaped head and small eyes. The body is massive and rounded with a short back. The head is long and the small, v-shaped ears are set close together in erect position. The nose is black and the tail is of medium length.

The Bull terrier is 20-24 inches and weighs 45-80 pounds.

The coat is short and is available in complete white or in different colour combinations. The Bull terrier is easy to groom and only requires brushing now and then. It sheds two times a year.

Bull terriers may be prone to suffer from heart disorder, kidney failure, allergies, and zinc deficiency. They quickly gain weight so overfeeding should be avoided. The white Bull terrier has a tendency of deafness. Average life expectancy is 10-12 years.
