The Boston terrier was originally bred to participate in dogfights in the USA. But back then the breed was significantly larger weighing 44 pounds or more. The original Boston terrier was a cross between the English bulldog and the now extinct English white terrier.

During the 19th century the original dog was crossed with the French bulldog making it smaller. Eventually, the pet dog, without any aggressive tendencies, that we know today was developed. The name stems from the American city Boston where it first became popular.

Character and behaviour
Today’s Boston terrier is a friendly, alert, and goodhearted dog. It is a dog with lots of personality and energy. It is relatively easy to train and most Boston terriers are therefore well behaved with the right owner. However, it is a terrier thus making it stubborn and independent in some situations. The Boston terrier is very social and gets along well with strangers and other pets.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Boston terrier is a compact, heavy build, little dog. The dog’s face is very characteristic with its broad flat skull, and big round eyes placed far apart. The muzzle is large and the nose is black.

The ears are short an erect. The chest is deep and well proportioned with the rest of the body. A Boston terrier is typically 15-17 inches and weighs 10-25 pounds.

The short distinct muzzle makes it difficult for the dog to breath in extreme weather conditions. This Boston terrier can also overheat if physically pressed too hard when exercising. It also snores and drools.

The coat is short, shiny, and has a nice texture. Usually, the coat is black and white or brown and white. It is easy to groom. It only needs a brushing now and then. It does shed a bit. In addition, it is important to clean the ears and eyes regularly in order to avoid infections.
