Australian stumpy tail cattle dog is an energetic and alert breed. It is a typical cattle dog specialised in controlling herds of cattle. It originates, as the name implies, from Australia. It is a brave and loyal dog that needs a daily job to do. It is not a typical family dog.

Character and behaviour
Australian stumpy tail cattle dog is a brave and faithful dog. It is also loyal towards its owners, but can be reserved towards strangers. It is of utmost importance to socialize this breed early in life seeing as it is a working dog with an independent mindset. Not your typical family dog, but it is good with children if grown accustomed to them as a puppy.

Australian stumpy tail cattle dog has a high level of energy and thus suitable for agility training. In general a fine dog if you wish to spend many hours training a dog. The dog does well in herding competitions and obedience training. It is a dog, which requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation daily. Moreover, it is an excellent guard dog.

History of the breed
The Australian stumpy tail cattle dog is an Australian breed, which was developed in the 19th century. It is a cross between many different breeds. Originally, English sheep dogs and wild dingoes were crossed but the outcome was not fit for use. Afterwards collies, Dalmatians, Australian kelpies, and possibly bull terrier were crossed in. However, it is thought that the bull terrier has been removed from the version we know today.

Appearance, grooming and health
Australian stumpy tail cattle dog is a well-proportioned medium-sized dog. The ears are pointed and erect. The muzzle is pointed. The oval-shaped eyes are medium-sized and dark. The nose is black. Front legs are straight. Hind legs are strong and muscular. Its most characteristic feature is the fact that it has a bobtail.

The Australian stumpy tail cattle dog is 17-20 inches tall and weighs 35-50 pounds.

The coat is short and flat. Moreover, the coat is weather resistant and only requires little care. A brushing now and then is enough. It sheds 1-2 times a year. Generally speaking a healthy breed, but it may suffer from hip dysplasia, deafness, or blindness. Life expectancy is 15 years.
